Adapting TBL for Online Prematriculation Course for Medical and Pharmacy Students: Modifications and Implications
Dr. Stephen Schneid, Director of Educational Development and Scholarship at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, adapted TBL for an online prematriculation course for medical and pharmacy students. His modifications to the traditional TBL Readiness Assurance Tests (RATs) included creating RATs at an application-level difficulty, allowing extra time and an open-note policy for RATs, and excluding the IRAT score from the final grade. Students expressed higher satisfaction and demonstrated greater collaboration with these modifications. Dr. Schneid concluded that students are willing to solve challenging problems as a team with sufficient time to ponder the problem and motivation to use and exchange their educational resources.
